He’s very loosely based on an actual adventurer, Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) an English geographer, explorer, pastry chef, translator, writer, soldier, orientalist, cartographer, ethnologist, spy, linguist, poet, Egyptologist, fencer and diplomat.
