Thanks, Mike. I’m sure there’s a safety reason helmets don’t have crests, but I couldn’t resist.
I think it’s part Aerodynamics and part “They make it easier to break your neck”, but I’m quite willing to bet it’s more the latter than the former.
The extra bit on top of the helmet can hit something to cause a more lethal “Cartoon hits their head on [insert a horizontal object here] and their neck stretches a yard (or more) before snapping back” scenario.
