Page 88 – It Is Done
As Lying Cat says, Jane is bluffing. The assassin guy asked her to end it all—a minor but important detail. Still, an effective bluff.
If you’re not reading Saga (pictured) then you are dead to me. Like a dead mummy. Which isn’t so bad. Usually.
Return to this spot on Mummday for the next chapter, in which our heroine gets some much needed comic relief.
Nice use of “isometric view” in panels 7 & 8–it’s very effective.
And as far as killing goes, Jane didn’t judge Mr. Cowboy, and he is just as satisfyingly dead as anyone might wish. A creative approach to a thorny problem–even if it was not directly intended.
I rather liked that cowboy. Ah well, assassins and conspirators do seem to have a high rate of attrition around Jane. Maybe she’s cursed or something?
“Everything’s gonna work out just fine! ”
LYING
Hey now, they all live happily ever after*
LYING TO THE THIRD POWER
And the scary monster turns back into the scared little girl. Poor Jane. This is so much for her to handle.
I know she’s plucky and all, but still.
Those last three panels are golden. The three point perspective and the way you silently pull back to reveal everything. I love how you fill up a panel.
They didn’t cover the poor nurse. Does that mean she might still be alive?
Ah, you noticed that. Jackal Judgey Jane isn’t exactly herself. And, the poor nurse being carried away does survive. The fake nurse being questioned by the authorities, in the last panel, is thinking real hard about confessing everything. Pulling back sure makes the last few pages seem to quaint. It’s just one room in a hospital.
Jane says (I think to the fake nurse) “I beheld what Ben did to you. However, if they hurt her again, I will KILL you all!” (Sometimes it’s hard to be sure if you’re bolding words deliberately…)
This statement of hers makes me flounder a little, because if the man did something to the fake nurse to force her to participate in this scene, we, the readers, didn’t see it. And who is “they” in that case?
You’re correct in everything. The fake nurse may have been threatened or coerced into their little conspiracy. She rats out the rest of the group between this page and the next. I should have fleshed that out more, apologies. This is my first attempt at writing fiction, and keeping track of what’s clear to readers vs what in my head is something I’m trying to improve. Thank you for pointing it out. 🙂
I had exactly the same problem. In addition, she’s hugging her mother while speaking, so it took me a minute to figure out she was speaking to the nurse – while addressing her mother (who is right next to her) as “her” instead of “mom” or “mother”.
At the 4th comment I think it’s high time to say that I found this comic just today. It took me several pages to get into the mood of a comic that is made to be look like it was made in the last century while the story takes place in the next century. But now I totally dig it. 🙂
Does Jane even know she is bluffing?
Sir Tyree didn’t explain exactly how “Judging their souls” works, he even urged her to use it against living humans. Also, even if Jane understands by now that this is not a killing power, unless the judged one asks for it, she is not limited to that power.
I mean, I have no super powers whatsoever, but if someone would hurt or threaten the family of my brother in the way similar to here, I would kill them all, by whatever means I can grab, or die trying.
