Chapter: Chapter 9
Characters: Annabelle Hoderan, Georgia Webb, Harriet, Jane Webb, Marry Webb, Rohit Webb, Thomas Webb
There is MORE TO COME! I’m going to take a few months off to write the next volume. And, I’m REALLY EXCITED with what I’ve got planned so far. Must. Resist. Spoilers.
I’d love to know what you liked, or didn’t like, or wasn’t clear. I can take it, because I want the next one to be even better. In the mean time, check out some of the other web comics in the links section, above. Like Vatican Assassins or Demon Archives. Both of which got cameos as the two guards in this page.
THANKS FOR READING!
Ooh is that guard, Tenzin? Yay! 😀
Yeah, it’s hard to recognize him. That was intended to be royal guard Tenzin.
What I don’t like is that there is no more! (For awhile). I will wait with bated breath until the next installment.
I really like this page. Not only the Flute cameo, though she does look super spiffy in that guard uniform with a real rifle, but the way the images progress, following the maid outside with the tea and then panning out to show the house, the yard, the slightly ominous snow angel…it’s brilliant story-showing.
Resisting spoilers is so hard. I always wanna tell everyone all the awesome things that are coming. But you must resist! You must!
No spoilers, but I’ll post some Mummy art along the way. I know it’s not the same as a real story, BUT coming soon for a Halloween comic crossover: “October 20th: the Musical” as performed by Jane and company.
i really like the story, the art, and the victorian futurism meets egyptian funerary practices background. i have two observations, though. i know that the graverobbing and murdery parts left little space for it in this chapter, but i would like to see more of jane’s reaction to finding out that she has been dead for three years, is now a mummy, and her friends have moved on. she seems to be taking it in stride, but is she? the other thing is probably actually an effect of my (not a joke) early senility, but some of the scene changes were a bit hard to follow. it seemed like some of the scenes changed before they were really over. i would find myself hitting previous to see if i had missed an episode. if it isn’t in my head it may be a minor pacing problem.
Thanks, Anatman. Pacing is defiantly something I’d like to improve. As you say, to give characters room to deal with things and also letting important scenes sink in with the reader. Thank you! I hope to see you back here when the next book kicks off. Cheers.
Kind of silly of him to talk about “superstitious twaddle” to a mummy, isn’t it?
Ha, too true! In his defense mummies are now a normal part of life (in this world). Cursed cards are still difficult to prove or disprove.
I can’t wait. I mean I can wait but I’m interested.
Its going to be EPIC! (As soon as I can figure out the secret formula for “epic”). 🙂
Bravo! How many more sleeps until Christmas?
I like it when a story reveals information to you at it’s own pace. A little “A-ha! So THAT’S what that other thing was,” moment now and then.
Enjoying the artwork. When we were kids my dad hit the thrift stores pretty often and found all sorts of treasures for us to read. One book he brought home was an elementary school reading textbook probably from the late 30’s. The artwork here reminds me a lot of the art from that book, I wish I still had it. But it is a pleasing memory.
As of right now: only 55 more sleeps!
If you find out what that textbook was I’d love to know the title. I’m always looking for style references. 🙂
So excited. I’m enjoying these immensely, especially the humor and world-building going on here. The cameo from Ammit was splendid too. A thing I took away from this that is noteworthy is the constant, natural movement of the characters in their surroundings. Especially the scenes of what would have been long blocks of text spread out into montages of beautiful steampunkish scenery. The back-and-forth between Jane and the ghost are the highlight for me, certainly.
*marks calendar for next issue*
Thank you, BriarProse. You’re not the first to mention the ghost. I’m glad he’s a favorite considering Sir Tyree is just a bunch of floating word balloons. Dialog is fun to write, and then a challenge to make visually interesting.
They’ve got female guards – very progressive!
Spoilers: Female officers of the city watch, too.
I hoped she would be delivered from being a mummy in the end. But so, there is a need to go on.
Aw, but then I’d have to come up with a whole new title like, “I’m No Mummy” or “Do I Look Like Yo Mummy?!” Seriously though, I think you’ll like volume 2. The bandages are coming off!
Alright. So.
Finished binge-reading Book One in less than an hour (while you spent MONTHS drawing it… how unfair 😀 ) and enjoyed the ride so much. Didn’t expect the murder plot nor the God-Of-Death turn – which would have been great even if I *had* expected them, mind you!
The victorian futurism, mixed with the above elements, makes it all so compelling and unique. Meaning you’ve managed, in my humble (and ill-informed) opinion, to realize something that will be named whenever something similar comes out (“Seen that new thing? It’s like ‘I, Mummy’ but with aliens!”).
In the next days I’ll binge-read the rest, to catch up with the other loyal fans who read one panel at a time – god I love serials – and if something isn’t clear by then, I’ll let you know.
About Jane’s reaction to her condition, well, it depends on the story tone, too. One should always remember Princess Leia -> home planet destroyed, reacts for a second quite like if second-favorite toy got broken, then forgets about it and never mentions it again in three movies; no filmgoer does care ever 🙂
That being said, if you’re going to further investigate her inner reactions to being an UNBREATHING MONSTER (scary, scary as hell) directly connected to the realm of the dead… well, I’m with you 100%
In the end: thanks for your hard work, sir, and sorry for the flood of comments all at once. Some days I can’t shut my mouth, really.
Oh wow! I’ve been trying to think of the best way to let you know how much this means to me. You’ve made my crappy day a true delight! It’s getting really dusty in here. Thank you. Thank you!
“I, Mummy” with aliens. Hmm, I like it.
Don’t worry, there are no aliens in the next volume. Probably. 😉 This next story definitely deals with Jane’s “condition”. My favorite bits of the action start after the half way point, which is what I’m working on right now.
Thank you for the avalanche of comments! Both for the big fat ego-inflated head I now have, but also because it really highlights what parts really work. I don’t know how other authors can work in such solitude. Web comics are the best. Cheers!
