Page 20 – Disgraceful Behavior
Uh-oh, something doesn’t add up here.
I’ve begun adding the original script to the bottom of each page. This is the text I started with before drawing the page, so it won’t always match the finished comic. Hopefully I’ll remember to remove any major spoiler notes-to-self.
Original Script
Cut to: Jane is sleeping peacefully in her bed. Mom slams open her bedroom door. MOM Jane Webb! Explain yourself at once! JANE Half asleep and confused. Huh? MOM How dare you treat Annabelle like that! JANE Still confused, shocked, and worried. What?! I never… MOM Your behavior this morning… Disgraceful! Trudge down and apologize before she gives her notice. JANE B-But… I’ve been in bed all night. I haven’t spoken to Annabelle since dinner.
Uh-Oh. I say there’s shenanigans afoot. Doin’s a’transpirin’. What could it be? Mean-spirited spirit taking her over? Rude doppelganger in her stead? Or is she simply covering her bad behaviour by fibbing?
But if it is something supernatural, how long has it been around. Was it what blew up at Ezra a week ago, and even he couldn’t tell? Such delicious plot-thickening. Also, did we know Jane’s full name until now?
Points to Hjels! This is the first time Jane’s middle name has ever been mentioned.
So many questions-Is Jane Chandi Webb faking (as a teenager might), or does she really have partial amnesia?
Was Little Rude Riding Hood even Jane, or was it Sir Ezra manifesting himself?
Now, I just went and re-read the last comic, and Harriet wasn’t with her when she came home.
I’m voting for The Rude Doppelganger Theory.
Also, that first panel is adorable. And it’s nice to know Jane Chandi Webb’s full name.
Also, I like seeing your original script. It’s fun to see the changes the pages go through as they’re perfected.
Everything will be revealed on the next page.*
Until then, there are a few small clues: (a) the last line of the script for the previous page, which got changed, and (b) how Jane was dressed, but not the red-hood herring.
I’m glad to hear putting the old script on the pages isn’t too distracting.
*For certain values of “everything”.
Hmmm. The last line is “Servants these days lack discipline.” Which would suggest whoever speaks the line is perhaps accustomed to a different status quo where servants did in fact have more discipline? Parhaps in another time? An earlier time? Suggesting that it’s something older? Am I getting anywhere?
It’s because ██████████ ██████ went and █████ the █████ ██████████ to ████████ ███ █ ██████. Obvious, right?
That high-pitched whistling you hear is the steam pouring out of my ears as my brain tries to figure out how the heck there can be two Janes. This should come with an interesting explanation.
Wait, you’re a steampunk robot? Neat!
Well, that eliminates the “just being a teenager” explanation. So it’s either an impostor or a possession (and seemingly a temporary one at that). Though sleepwalking with a particularly eloquent grasp on insults has been added to the list of hypotheses.
I like your sleepwalking hypothesis. I’m not saying it’s correct. But, I like it and is now my excuse for chronic foot-in-mouth disease, “Don’t blame me. I must have been sleepwalking.” 🙂
Hahah. I know that morning look, I’ve given it to my mother before 😀
Did she confiscate your pillow, too?
Uh oh… the amulet has a serious side effect.
Seriously, a real drawback. Because nothing comes free.
Hmmm. So if the Amulet has sharpened her sensitivity to the spirit realm, let’s see if it has done anything for her deductive powers. 🙂
Teens don’t function well before noon, so we’ll see.
