Page 84 – You have power
Ooh, I wouldn’t want to get on her bad side. Jane doesn’t feel pain the same way we do, either.
This is my favorite page so far. The panel layout is based on a technique I picked up from someone on tumblr analyzing old Daredevil comics–panels were arranged to form a triangle that directed attention towards something important on the page. In this case, Jane powering up some serious mojo.
Return to this locale on Monday next for a hefty serving of whoop ass.
That’s just a heaping helping of badass.
Great layout! Everything funnels down to the badass bottom image. Which is badass, by the way.
As the lights go out, too.
MUMMY FIST!
“Flying jackal power punch!!”
Actually, she’s conjuring up something. Not punching.
Woo! Great page! I really like the juxtaposition of frilly nightdress and arcane power, and the lack of pupils in Jane’s eyes. That, good sir, is STYLE!
Thank you, Good Sir! 🙂
I too like that this whole scene played out while she’s in a frilly nightgown. I wish more comics caught their protagonists in awkward moments of boring daily routines.
Awwww yeah Jane’s gonna let them have it! That’ll teach them to stab already dead people! And this layout really works. The eye is kept moving through the action. I love when you post in progress shots. Can I ask where you get your blue lead from?
Thanks, Melissa. Oddly enough, I had trouble finding non-photo blue pencils. No one in town sells them. Plus, some brands are too waxy and don’t erase nicely. I found these at Dick Blick in Portland and they’ve been great. Staedtler Non-Photo pencils. Glad you like the works-in-progress shots.
Quite a page-turner! I wouldn’t mind seeing this as a book at some point.
Interesting to have her eyebrows on the outside of the bandages. But it’d be tough otherwise. And many precedents of other places where eyebrows are drawn over hats, or for extreme surprise, floating in the air above their faces.
I often draw full eyebrows under someone’s hair. Whatever works.
And eyebrows on the outside of bandages work great.
If you really need to explain them, you could have her pencil eyebrows on the bandages sometime.
I’m really glad to hear that you’ve been enjoying the story so far, Joseph. A printed book is in definitely the plans, but I don’t know when. The book may also include retro-future versions of the classic “X-ray specs” and “Sea Monkey” mail-order ads from decades ago, slipped between some of the chapters.
Charlie, thanks for the great idea. If I get to a scene where she’s getting ready to go out on the town I’ll have to remember to show her literally putting on her face. 😀
The X-Ray Specs and Sea Monkey ads are a great idea! I think you should reach out to your fellow creators to make up some mock ads for the back cover. I’d love to make one.
Ooh, that’s an even better idea! (Less work for me)
Holy toledo, I remember those ads…
When I was quite young, I loved comic books. And then every year my mother had me roll them up and give them away at Halloween, like candy. We had people tell us they drove in from another COUNTY to my house at Halloween because of that.
I’d be rich if I still had those to sell on E-Bay….
And I really like this page. Except the fist bothers me a bit, because the thumb is about three times too long. 🙂
Aww, I’m sorry you had to give away your comics. But, you are richer for it in spirit. And that thumb bothers me, too. C’est la vie.
First action, then action, now more action and THE DARK SIDE
I’m officially hooked.
And it only took 84 pages. 🙂
ONE PUNCH!
